The Sobering Facts About Fetal Alcohol Exposure- This course describes the prevalence of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) in the United States, the range of neurodevelopment problems associated with FASD, and the consequences of it across the lifespan for affected individuals. The role of the speech-language pathologist is highlighted. FASDs are the leading preventable causes of birth defects and mental retardation in the United States. SLPs can assist in creating and disseminating educational information about the importance of not drinking while pregnant, and the effects of alcohol consumption on the unborn child. The message is simple and clear: FASDs are 100% preventable.
